Saving water with a smile

In Oudega (municipality of Smallingerland), in the heart of the Frisian countryside, lies Camping de Stjelp: a welcoming campsite run by Aline and Menno de Jong since 1998. The campsite uses coin-operated showers to reduce water and gas consumption. ‘What was initially an adjustment is now a success: guests shower more consciously and for shorter periods of time, resulting in much less waste.’ The Ode to the Washcloth is also used in the sanitary buildings, a light-hearted nod that often sparks a conversation about more sustainable behavior.

There is plenty of water in Fryslân. Or is there?!

Our province is known for its Frisian Lakes, the Wadden Sea, and the extensive network of waterways and canals. Plenty of water. And yet, we are facing a drinking water crisis. How is that possible? Climate change is causing more drought and salinization. At the same time, because of our growing economy and population the demand for water is increasing.

Even here the availability of enough clean water is becoming less and less self-evident. Isn’t it a bit strange that we flush the toilet with mineral water? And what about water quality? You’ve probably read something in the media about the quality of groundwater and surface water.

We therefore need to learn how to use water differently. Water is one of the most important resources in our economy. No life can exist without it.

As a business owner, have you already taken water-saving measures? It can be quick and simple, for example by asking your guests to use water wisely, placing stickers near the taps in the toilets, or offering washcloths in the bathrooms. If you want to take it a step further, there are also options to invest in water-saving solutions, such as toilets that flush with rainwater.
